Home of the Cherokee Natives

Waleska is a small, conservative, and rural town just north of Canton in Cherokee County and was incorporated in 1889, but the area was settled prior to this time by the Reinhardt, Sharp, and Rhyne families as well as home to the Cherokee Natives. Waleska was even named for Warluskee, the daughter of a famous local Cherokee chief who lived in the area prior to the Trail of Tears. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis W. Reinhardt were good friends with Warluskee and named the town in her honor. Waleska’s industry included grist mills, lumbering and tobacco manufacturing.
