A “Norman Rockwell” Town with its Eclectic Charm and History

Locals call Adairsville, GA, a “Norman Rockwell” town with its eclectic charm and history. Adairsville was the first Georgia town to be listed in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1987. It is located in the Oothcalooga Valley and is named after Chief John Adair, a Scottish settler who married a Cherokee Indian. Visitors today can go to the Welcome Center, which resides in the old 1847 Railroad Depot, which is at the epicenter of the town and was central to the town’s development bringing mills, blacksmiths and hotels around the town square.

The original train depot was the location of the famous Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War, which was made famous by Walt Disney and the movie he made commemorating the adventure. Every October, Adairsville hosts it’s annual Great Locomotive Chase Festival, which is a three-day celebration. Today, Adairsville is a mix of pre-Civil War and Victorian homes and churches. The streets are all succinctly lined with old trees, which gives the town a feel of yesteryear as visitors stroll to the antique shops, local boutiques, and quality restaurants. Come visit Adairsville and enjoy the Annual Christmas on the square tradition.

It is a nostalgic and quiet town and is ranked as one of the safest cities in Georgia according to the 2019 Safest Cities in Georgia Report. Just five miles outside Adairsville is the romantic Barnsley Resort, a luxurious 1840s estate where today guests can enjoy an ultimate retreat experience combining a connection to nature and high-end amenities that includes fine dining, a lavish spa, heirloom gardens, and a Jim Fabio designed golf course.
