Ball Ground

The Appalachian Mountains are famous for their diverse and stunning beauty. It’s no surprise then that the foothills of these beauties are the perfect setting for the small, quaint town of Ball Ground.

The town’s unusual name purportedly came from the habit of the area’s Cherokees using a nearby field for their ball games. It is believed that the Cherokee even played members of the Creek tribe for 1000 square miles of land – and won.

But being christened with a name did not make it a city. Ball Ground was an agricultural community and didn’t make “city” status until 1882 when, as has happened with so many other incorporated cities, the railroad came through.

Today Ball Ground is a small but thriving, friendly city of around 2000. In fact, the city is so serious about welcoming new businesses, jobs, and people that their motto is, “Where we roll out the red carpet, not the red tape.”

Take a stroll back in time through the downtown, which is on the National Registry of Historic Places. While you’re there, take in a nighttime concert or movie in the City Park, a series that runs from May through October. Or celebrate Independence Day a bit early by attending the annual Faith and Freedom Fest, sponsored by the United Methodist Church. And yes, there are fireworks, brought to you by the City of Ball Ground. The festival is held on the Saturday before July 4.

And one week after Thanksgiving is the annual March of the Toys for Tots Parade, an extremely popular event that brings in over 4000 Christmas and parade-loving souls from all over.

The stunning Gibbs Gardens may well leave you breathless as you take in the jaw-dropping beauty. From the Daffodil Festival beginning in early March, to the Japanese Maples Color Fest through mid-November, this amazing living museum of art is the nature lover’s dream come true.

A rich history, fun activities, and a warm welcome to both new business and people makes Ball Ground a special place to visit or better yet, settle down.
